‘Music has enriched my life immeasurably; it has helped me look at life with optimism’ –
Dr Chithra Ramakrishnan, Founder & Director, Shruthi UK
People and communities are being encouraged to nominate ordinary women who they feel deserve recognition and reward for their extraordinary work.
Three women with the highest number of public votes will be invited and honoured next month as part of International Women’s Day, which has become an integral part of the popular annual Birmingham Thyagaraja Festival.
The Festival, led by Shruthi UK, a Solihull-based South Asian arts & culture organisation, will bring to life the songs, rhythms and teachings of Thyagaraja, one of south India’s iconic composers of Indian and Carnatic classical music.
Thyagaraja, also known as the singing saint, composed thousands of devotional hymns, most in praise of the Hindu God, Lord Rama, many of which remain popular today.
The Festival will also help further swell the coffers of British Heart Foundation. Donna Stokes, Fundraising Manager, at the BHF said:
“It is estimated that there are over 24,000 people living in Solihull with Cardiovascular disease (heart and circulatory disease). Funds raised from events like this will help us to fund vital heart research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. We are very grateful for the support of Shruthi UK raising money to enable us to save lives and keep families together.”
The Festival is offering individuals and organisations stalls to showcase their products and services. A small charge will apply.
To nominate, please send a brief on the individual, in no more than 150 words, about why your selected person should be honoured by 5pm Friday 23 February. Please e-mail email@example.com
For donations, sponsorships, stall hire and for any other enquiries please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 07875 472 307.
The honours will be announced at the Birmingham Thyagaraja Festival on Saturday, 10th March 2018 at Dorridge Village Hall, Grange Road, Dorridge, B93 8QA. The family-friendly event will take place between 10am and 6pm. All welcome.
